RMS Updated Cell Phone Policy for 2025-2026 

RMS Parents and Guardians,

Following the success and positive momentum of the cell phone/ technology policy change in the 2024-2025 school year, RMS administration has decided to continue to support a policy that does not allow for students to use cellular phones and personal listening devices during the school day (7:10 am to 2:10 pm).

The policy is as follows: 

• Cell phones must be turned off and kept in student backpacks until the end of the school day (2:10pm) Our preference, not requirement, is that the cell phones stay at home. Keep in mind the school is not responsible for lost or stolen electronic or other personal property students choose to bring to school. The school does understand the security and reassurance the cellular telephone can provide parents in being able to track the location of their children. The school encourages parents/caregivers to have a conversation with your child/young adult about responsible cell phone use and what that should look like.

• Unless through prior arrangement to support the emotional or cognitive wellbeing of a student, personal listening devices such as airpods, earbuds, over the ear headphones are not permitted to be used during the school day and similar enforcement will result if used. 

We ask for your support in reviewing this policy with your student(s) and ensuring they understand its importance. Please call the school with any messages that your student(s) needs to receive before the end of the end of the school day. Help your student be successful by not calling or text messaging them during the school day. We do understand that emergencies happen so when needed, students can use a school phone to contact parents. 

We anticipate that some students may try to use their phones in restrooms and ask that you help us prevent and stop this from happening. Using a cell phone in a school restroom or locker room is highly inappropriate as phones could be used to take pictures/videos. Students should feel safe everywhere at school, especially in a restroom/locker room, and not be concerned about others taking their picture without their consent. 

Here is how the policy is enforced:

1. First Offense: The student will be asked to give their phone to the staff member. It will be labeled, logged, and kept in the office until the end of the day, and the student can pick it up.

2. Second Offense: The student will be asked to give their phone over to a staff member. It will be labeled, logged, and kept in the office until the end of the day. Additionally, the student will need to serve a lunch detention.  A parent conference via phone or in person will also be requested. The parent and student will be offered the choice to check the phone in/out of the office each day to avoid a third offense. 

3. Third Offense: The student will be asked to give their phone to the staff member. The phone will be labeled, logged, and kept in the office until picked up by a parent or guardian. Please note our office closes at 3:30 M-Th and 2:30 on Friday. A plan will be made to keep the phone at home or check it in daily at the start of the school day and checked out of the office each day. Lunch detentions will be assigned. 

4. Phones Out in Restrooms/Locker Rooms or used to record a fight/other altercation/student will be treated as a major infraction, which could result in discipline ranging from a parent conference up to and including suspension depending on the severity of the circumstances. A parent/guardian will need to pick the phone up from the school. 

We believe that we can continue the positive trajectory that was started last year this year at RMS. To be truly successful, we need the support of families to encourage responsible behavior of students. RMS – Política Actualizada de Teléfonos Celulares para el Ciclo Escolar 2025-2026

Estimadas madres, padres y tutores de RMS:

Después del éxito y los resultados positivos que vimos con el cambio en la política sobre el uso de teléfonos celulares y dispositivos tecnológicos durante el ciclo escolar 2024-2025, la administración de RMS ha decidido continuar con una política que no permite que los estudiantes usen teléfonos celulares ni dispositivos de audio personales durante la jornada escolar (de 7:10 a.m. a 2:10 p.m.).

La política es la siguiente:

• Los teléfonos celulares deberán estar apagados y guardados dentro de la mochila del estudiante hasta que termine el día escolar (2:10 p.m.). Nuestra recomendación —aunque no es obligatorio— es que los teléfonos se queden en casa.

• Tomen en cuenta que la escuela no se hace responsable por la pérdida o robo de aparatos electrónicos u otros objetos personales que los estudiantes decidan traer.

• Sabemos que para muchas familias es importante la seguridad y tranquilidad que brinda poder localizar a sus hijos mediante el teléfono. Por eso, les invitamos a conversar con sus hijos(as) sobre el uso responsable del celular y cómo debe ser este.
  
  

A menos que exista un acuerdo previo para apoyar el bienestar emocional o cognitivo del estudiante, no está permitido el uso de dispositivos de audio personales como airpods, audífonos de botón o diadema durante el día escolar. En caso de usarlos sin autorización, se aplicará una sanción similar a la del uso de teléfonos.

Les pedimos su apoyo para revisar esta política con sus hijos(as) y asegurarse de que comprendan su importancia. Si necesitan enviar un mensaje a sus hijos antes de que termine la jornada, les pedimos que llamen directamente a la escuela. Para ayudar a que los estudiantes tengan éxito, eviten llamarles o mandarles mensajes de texto durante el horario de clases. En caso de una emergencia, los estudiantes pueden usar el teléfono de la escuela para comunicarse con ustedes.

Sabemos que algunos estudiantes podrían intentar usar sus teléfonos en los baños. Les pedimos que nos ayuden a evitar y detener esta conducta. Usar un teléfono en un baño o vestidor escolar es totalmente inapropiado, ya que podrían tomarse fotos o videos. Los estudiantes deben sentirse seguros en cualquier lugar de la escuela, especialmente en los baños y vestidores, sin preocuparse de que alguien les tome fotos sin su consentimiento.

Así se aplicará la política:

• Primera falta: El estudiante entregará su teléfono al personal. El aparato será etiquetado, registrado y guardado en la oficina hasta el final del día. El estudiante podrá recogerlo al salir.
  
  

• Segunda falta: El estudiante entregará el teléfono al personal. Se etiquetará, registrará y guardará en la oficina hasta el final del día. Además, el estudiante deberá cumplir una detención durante el almuerzo (lunch detention). Se pedirá también una reunión con los padres, ya sea por teléfono o en persona. En esta reunión, se ofrecerá la opción de que el estudiante entregue y recoja su teléfono diariamente en la oficina para evitar una tercera falta.
  
  

• Tercera falta: El estudiante entregará su teléfono al personal. El aparato será etiquetado, registrado y guardado en la oficina hasta que un padre o tutor lo recoja. Les recordamos que la oficina cierra a las 3:30 p.m. de lunes a jueves y a las 2:30 p.m. los viernes. Se establecerá un plan para que el teléfono se quede en casa o se entregue diariamente en la oficina al inicio del día y se recoja al final. También se asignarán detenciones durante el almuerzo.
  
  

El uso de teléfonos en baños o vestidores, o para grabar peleas u otros altercados, será tratado como una falta grave, lo que podría resultar en medidas disciplinarias que van desde una reunión con los padres hasta una suspensión, dependiendo de la gravedad del caso. El teléfono solo podrá ser recogido por un padre o tutor.

Creemos que este año podremos continuar con el progreso positivo que empezamos el año pasado en RMS. Para lograrlo, necesitamos el apoyo de las familias para fomentar conductas responsables en los estudiantes. Esta es solo una de las muchas acciones que estamos tomando para mejorar la participación académica y social, así como el rendimiento escolar.
